Half of schools off list (No Child Left Behind success in TN)

August 12, 2004
About half of the Memphis City Schools listed as having trouble meeting federal standards last year are now off the list, officials said Thursday. But not all the news was good. Sixteen of the 19 schools rated in the worst shape statewide are in Memphis.

Results of how well area schools fared under the federal "No Child Left Behind" program were met with broad smiles and celebrations in schools in Memphis and Shelby County.

"We're finally moving in the right direction," said a jubilant Patrice Jordan Robinson, president of the city school board during a hastily called press conference. "This is a great day for Memphis City Schools. Give yourselves a hand."
