FATWA: Sistani Bans Religious Authority Interference in Electoral Issues

Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani has blocked the road of anyone who is wagering on that the religious authority to support his stakes in the elections campaign, which is to be witnessed by Iraq at all levels and sectors.

The first representative of Sayyid al-Sistani in Basra, Sayyid Ali Abd-al-Hakim al-Safi, said that there was a fatwa from the religious authority banning his representatives from interfering in electoral issues. He added: People are free to choose; the role of the religious authority is only to enlighten people. He rejected the claims that Al-Najaf had supported in the elections any tendency at the expense of another. ... FR Reprint.
